Catherine Pleau and her students at V. J. Gallagher Middle School created this community profile and collected the sounds presented here in connection with the 2004-05 Geography Action! theme, "Cultures: The Sound of Place." National Geographic has not researched or edited this page.

Welcome from Smithfield, Rhode Island! Sections of Smithfield have their own distinct names such as Esmond, Greenville, Spragueville, Mountaindale, Georgiaville, and Stillwater. These were the names of mill villages established here in the middle 1800s. During the 19th and 20th centuries, old Smithfield has transformed from an agrarian society into a manufacturing center.

Most Distinctive Sound (.mp3 file): Deerfield Park. My students chose the sounds of Deerfield Park. Children, young adults, and the elderly alike come to the park for recreation, exercise, and relaxation. Deerfield is a definite focal point of 02917.

The Sound of Human/Environment Interaction (.mp3 file): Oldies Tractor. The sound of this old tractor turning over represents one of the earliest forms of human/environment interaction, farming.

The Sound of Change (.mp3 file): Interview with Grandfather. Smithfield has long been a farmland, especially known for its apple orchards. Farmers are trying to preserve their ways of life. Changes in equipment have taken place in order to "keep up" with the times. The changes can be viewed as both a curse and a blessing!
